Minor Assignments

These are the minor assignments I chose that represent the Course Outcomes

Reading Response: 'With Love, For Love' by Natali Barakat and 'The Story of a Guatemalan Boy' by HP

For this reading response, I was required to look for how both of these stories were successful narratives. How were the authors able to connect their past experiences to the present? How could I make my own narrative sound like theirs?

I was able to showcase how the Writing and Power outcome takes place in this assignment. The stories both demonstrate how personal feelings towards their culture and being an immigrant in the United States can identify one's identity.

Reading Response: Multimodal Composing

This reading response required the student to complete two readings and a video on the topic of multimodality. How do you define multimodality? What are the stages of multimodal composing? How can I identify the type of strategies being used in the narratives provided?

I was able to showcase how the Multiple Literacies and Goal Setting outcome was achieved in this assignment.  One reading defined the meaning of multimodality and provided the strategies that are used, while the other reading was a multimodal literacy narrative. The last multimodal literacy narrative was also a video. While I was writing this response, I had to go across three different types of multimodal pieces to answer the questions. This assignment also helped prepare me for my first major assignment, which was my own multimodal literacy narrative.

Minor Assignment 3:

Reading Response: Genre Theory and Genre Awareness

This reading response required the student to define what a genre is and to identify a genre of writing and its features that I would like to study for the rest of the semester.

I was able to show how the Writing Processes & Adaptation outcome was accomplished in this assignment. I defined what a genre was and how it doesn't just help me, but helps many people on their own writing journey. I specifically chose to study the lab report genre because it will be beneficial for my career going forward. I want to be able to understand how scientists communicate their findings on their experiments. Being able to understand the conventions of this genre will help me adapt my writing so that I can successfully meet the requirements of writing lab reports in the future.
