Major Assignment 3: 

This assignment required students to compare different genres and explain what a genre was. I chose to compare restaurant menus and recipes, since they had one thing in common: communication about food. I provided images and examples of each and was able to analyze them as well as the targeted audience. 

 

I was able to showcase the Variation Across Contexts learning outcome by analyzing rhetorical and linguistic patterns through the two types of genres I chose, and how it varies based on the context. I compared both of my genres by analyzing examples and showing how similar and different the types of communication are through the genres. 

 

Another outcome that I was able to showcase in this essay was the Decision Making & Production outcome. The students were given a wide range of genres to choose from, making it up to the student to make the final decision for the analysis. I specifically chose the restaurant menus and recipes because of the common thing they shared–food. I analyzed both of them and the differences they had, while also going over why it is appealing to its targeted audience.
