This assignment required students to write a narrative about their own literacy journey. How have my past experiences with literacy shaped the writer I am today? I chose to write about the most influential literary sponsors in my life, and how they affected me.

This essay helped me showcase two outcomes: Multiple Literacies & Goal Setting, and Variation across Contexts.

I was able to reflect on how the different sponsors have shaped me as a writer today. I had influential people who taught me the norms on how to be a good writer, but I also had people who taught me how literacy extends beyond just writing and reading. Being in touch with music taught me how it could tell a story, and how I can use my own writing to tell my stories about music.

I was able to show how language and communication could be changed based on situations, whether it is cultural situations, social situations, or even academic situations. An example of this was when I changed the way I talked in middle school. I became aware of how I sounded to people outside of my home, changing the way I spoke because of the environment I was surrounded by. My family also prioritized teaching me how to speak English, rather than their native language, fueling my desire to make them proud by being successful in school.
